MARGA

-the paths of classical traditions....

Mumbai's performing arts festival NRITYAM 09 is back for its 6th edition on the 28th Nov. from 6.30 p.m onwards at the I.E.S Manik Sabhagriha , Bandra Reclamation.

NRITYAM - the annual performing arts festival is hosted by the well-known art organization Shiladhish Art & Research Institute.  Over the years, it has taken several initiatives to de-mystify the classical arts & create an appreciative audience for the traditional arts.

In 2007, it flagged off an awareness campaign - AIM (ART INITIATIVE MOVEMENT) spearheaded by its artistic director, well known danseuse & choreographer Prakriti Bhaskar.

"A performing art can only be a living tradition. It cannot be preserved in a museum. It is alive in the body minds of its exponents & practitioners, and sustained by the appreciation of its patrons."

The A.I.M addresses issues & concerns of artistes & audience in the present art-scenario. It is essentially a movement developing organically and embracing change within the parameters of its core values:

‘Enriching life through the conservation, contribution & celebration of the arts'.

With two projects SAMSKARA & ARPANAM, it seeks to sensitize   the future generation of youth & adults to the fine-arts while acknowledging the contribution of artistes & gurus in keeping these traditions alive.

SAMSKARA :      arts-education project , is an enrichment programme that seeks to enhance the role of the arts in education, through a more holistic approach while also strengthening education in the arts.

An inter-active module involving teachers, parents & students to bring about more awareness & sensitivity to fine-arts especially the classical discipline of music & dance.  It seeks to de-mystify the classical arts essentially through a dialogue & by providing information & exposure.

The project has been implemented successfully in 5 schools in the city.

THE MODULES ARE CONDUCTED FREE OF COST FOR ALL EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS.

ARPANAM:         A project that deals with the fragile & sensitive system of                                                                                                            the guru-shishya parampara  - the oral tradition of                                                                                                                           handing down knowledge from the master to the disciple.                                                                                                          Acknowledging the role & contribution of the master in                keeping

a tradition alive, it provides financial support to                 ageing artistes/ gurus  and also funding support especially for documentation of their work.

NRITYAM - the annual performing arts festival is hosted by the well-known art organization Shiladhish Art & Research Institute in association with MULTIPLES Alternate Asset Management Pvt. Ltd, Future Group & PVR Cinemas. Essentially envisioned as a platform for artistes & art-lovers, it has over the years carved a niche for itself for featuring artistes from across the country & presenting art-forms not usually seen on the city's cultural scenario. The unusual themes presented through diverse dance-styles are a visual treat for the city audience.

This year NRITYAM 09 presents MARGA - the paths of classical traditions.

India is the only country in the world that prides itself of seven major classical dance traditions. Down the centuries, all of these have evolved into highly sophisticated & refined body-mind discipline. MARGA or ‘repertoire' presents a window to 4  distinct classical dance  forms in their traditional format.

NRITYAM '09 presents four of the very popular dance - styles - Bharata Natyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi & Mohini Attam by young & talented artistes from across the country.  Presented on one stage, each style bringing out its distinctive & varied expressions in movement, music & emotion yet bound together by an underlying & unifying aesthetic concept of Rasa. This unity in diversity promises to be a treat for all connoisseurs & rasikas.

This year we initiate ARPANAM by supporting & funding the work of a very senior & veteran dance-guru Smt. Rajee Narayan. Her project Golden Collections - a series of audio CDs of Bharatnatyam dance items will be released at NRITYAM 09.

This year too, the dance repertory of Shiladhish Art & Research Institute - NRTYAMANDALA DANCE ENSEMBLE presents  Bharatanatyam  promising in a breathtaking visual delight that sets the mood for the evening's performances that follow. Though essentially a solo art, Bharatanatyam lends itself beautifully to ensemble choreography. Conceived & choreographed by Prakriti Bhaskar, it presents 4 traditional compositions : Shiva Stotra - An invocation to Shiva Nataraja , followed by Pushpanjali. Next presented is Nandi shollu - An unusual piece expressive of Nandi playing the drum accompanying Shiva dance set to rhythmic syllabi. The performance concludes with Krishna Tandava - a Tillana describing Krishna's subjugation of the poisonous snake Kaliya & his joyous dance on his hood.

ART INITIATIVE MOVEMENT (A.I.M)     - The Vision:

AIM echoes the very essence & spirit of the artistic traditions & their vital role in shaping the future of a generation. While formal education is information oriented, it leaves little scope for the cultivation & expression of the human spirit. Adding to this is a life-style that is stressed for time, thanks to demanding careers.  As more & more remain disheartened & discontented with life in a society that is 'advanced, modern, & progressive'  'the man-machine' is no longer a fallacy.

Culture has assumed a renewed significance in today's scenario for it is essentially a cultivation of the human self- both inner & outer. The arts have a universal appeal & relevance across all social & economic classes, age groups & geographical boundaries. Culture is a leveler & human beings have an urge to create, to celebrate & to nourish their minds and souls just as they need food & clothing to satisfy their physical needs.  In India, the arts are inextricably intertwined with all aspects of our life. The classical arts developed a high level of sophistication striving to hone an individual's sensibilities. They continue to be inspirational & instrumental in spreading social values & ethics & reinforce our faith in the values of life.  However, the winds of change are blowing around us. The advent of information technology, communication media & globalization seems to have threatened & disturbed the  traditional systems & practices. Besides these commercial pressures, a lack of connoisseurs, dwindling audiences, drying up resources and a lack of facilities threaten the arts & its relationship with the community. A civil society needs to treasure its culture and heritage for posterity but it also needs to build bridges and move forward by using imaginative ways to present the arts to make them more appealing & relevant to today's world. This seems feasible when there is active participation of people at various levels- individuals, artistes, state authorities, business groups and other partners. An inclusive approach is essential to bring them to a common platform with a shared agenda to support the arts for the welfare of society.

Preserving the artistic & cultural traditions is as much a social responsibility as any other cause.  The arts are steeped in a value-system that not only allow an individual to stay rooted to his tradition but also ensures the growth of an integrated personality in touch with his inner self.

The AIM vision manifests at 2 levels:

  • 1. ARPANAM - a tribute to the torchbearers of our traditions.

  • 2. SAMSKARA - unfolding the creative potential in every child.
